Amanda Hale was a member of tbe Broadside Collective from 1982, when she moved to Toronto, until 1988 when she moved to British Columbia.
She wrote a variety of articles, covering theatre, visual arts, literature, conferences and feminist festivals, though her main role was a theatre critic since she was working in theatre at the time, first with Nightwood, and then with the Company of Sirens as co-founder. She also worked as a visual artist, collaborating with Lynn Hutchinson of Red Tree Since moving west she has developed a new career as a novelist and creative writing teacher, and is currently adapting her first novel, Sound the Blood, as a screenplay. Her most recent book – in the Embrace of the Alligator – is set in Cuba, where she spends part of each year.
Broadside provided Amanda with a rich network of contacts and an immediate sense of identity upon arriving in a new city. It gave her a sense of community, and access to Toronto’s leading feminist thinkers and activists. www.amandahale.com
